Banque Misr and its group of companies were founded by Talaat Harb Pasha in 1920 as the first nationalist and totally indigenous Egyptian modern economic entreprise. His purpose was to counteract the economic invasion of the country by foreign interests, specifically to discourage the shipping of raw Egyptian cotton for weaving in mills in the U.K., instead of weaving it in Egypt, by Egyptian labour.
